The borax mineral was discovered here in 1913 and other mining claims were staked in the area which led Boron to become a mining town. It is now home to the Rio Tinto Boron Mine, the largest borax mine in the world and California's largest open pit mine. The current mine opened in 1957 and supplies nearly half of the worlds supply of borates. The mine is approximately 1.7 miles wide, 1.9 miles long and 750 feet deep. The 20 mule team is well known in the area as these large wagons hauled borax across the desert from Death Valley to the railroad.
